Breadcrumbs are certainly the element to look out for in the future and this year 2021! Breadcrumbs are useful for the companies and the consumers alike. They are useful in keeping a track of your actions and pages viewed through a site. The element of breadcrumbs eventually helps in the rankings and the impact of sites on the search results.
Simply put, website breadcrumbs or termed as breadcrumb- trail are the secondary navigational system of a site or an application, tracing the user’s path within a site, located right below the primary navigation bar as a secondary navigation bar. It impacts the user-experience (UX), consequently impacting the respective sites to reduce its bounce rate which is good for the site on the whole, to increase its sessions which simply means users are spending more time on the site, increasing their views of the site and eventually positively impacting their seo ranking in the right direction i.e. in their searches.

Attribute-based breadcrumbs- simply put these are with the product attributes, seen very common with the product sites highlighting specific features, very common and popularly used breadcrumb.

Hierarchy based breadcrumb- this is considered as great navigation on a site, also shows where a user is in their search within a specific site. As one can see in the example below, the red circles are sort of breadcrumbs working for this specific location on a specific site, telling the user exactly where the user is, working seamlessly for the user in his/her customer-journey progressing towards the eventual conversions, hence increasing sales for the company.
Heirarchy based breacrumbs
History-based breadcrumbs- not popular at all in today’s times since it does not really add any value to the site. It’s a path-based breadcrumb, simply able to go forward and backward in the user’s navigation within a site, nothing else. For example: Homepage>prior page visited>prior page visited>current page
The user would ideally always want to know where they are in their search within a specific site, hence the element of trustworthiness, not wasting the ‘user’s time’ factor plays in here. Users’ clarity plays an important role here, hence, to be where at the specific position within a site where they intend to be, if correct, then more credit to the site or else the vice-versa. Consequently, reassuring the user of the link which eventually brings the correct useful information the user might be looking for from the search in the first place.
Conclusively, some of the more important reasons for the use of breadcrumbs on the site would be namely
Increase rankings of the page, site on the SERPs, hence increasing the specific sites credit worthiness, authority on the topic and expertise on the same, hence making all the different dynamics of a good site come together
Influence buyer behavior- simply put, this means if the site is constructed in a flawless, smooth manner with optimum navigational element, hence having the right breadcrumbs for the end users, these elements when they work together, will eventually make the user be on the site longer, hence increasing session time, interest in the specific site, consequently increasing the possibilities of higher conversions and sales on the site
Lastly, it simply helps users out, taking charge of the complex process of the site, giving the user exactly what the end user might be looking for on the site, hence creating a smooth consistent process online
All these elements when working in a cohesive manner will result in a higher ranking for the site on the SERPs, behavioral factor growth in end users, and helping users understand the site most optimally.
